Largest American Flag was photographed as it flew on the Dam May 1, 1996.
The flag belonged to Tom “Ski” Demski and had never flown before. It was decided to fly over the face of the dam during the running of the Summer Olympic torch as it traveled over the dam. However, the wind had other plans. Unfortunately, the wind caught the flag snapping one of the steel cables. As it fell the weight of the massive 505’ x 255’, 3000-pound flag snapped the remaining two cables. The hour that it managed to remain on the Dam was enough to have it certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest flag.
